Monday: Camera Basics CrissCross Puzzle

Students will provided a CrissCross Puzzle to solve. You will receive a word key and the puzzle, but no definitions will be provided. This is an independent exercise. Fill in the puzzle matching the word to the answers provided and lets see how well you know your terms :) Use class time to complete the exercise and turn in when completed.

Tuesday: CrissCross review

Today we will go over the Camera Basics CrissCross exercise. I will go around the room and each student will participate in providing the answer to the question posed. We will reinforce each term with further discussion and/or demonstration with the camera.

Wednesday Shots/Angles and Movement

Today we will create a 'shot sheet' for your first video exercise. You will make your final decision on who you will partner with for your TV Crew (remember, a minimum of 2 person crew and a max of 4 person crews allowed)

Monday: RECAP of Video Basics I, II & III

Through discussion, demonstration and Q & A we will recap the content provided in the Video Basics footage. (Please see last weeks lesson for links to all three videos).

Tuesday: Filmmaking Techniques

We will watch the "Filmmaking Techniques" video and the break out in to small groups to discuss Shot Types demonstrated in the video. Each group will write down a minimum of 10 Shot Types.

Wednesday/Thursday: Shot Types

Using our studio camera set up on a tripod and dolly system, student's will demonstrate various shot compositions and techniques as illustrated on "Filmmaking Techniques" video. With the output connected to the big screen, peers will offer critique on each demonstrated shot.

Students will use critical thinking skills and offer solutions to help create a more pleasing and/or correctly executed shot composition.

Friday: FREE FRIDAY

Free Friday will be offered to students on occasion. You may use this time to catch up on any work for either TV Production Class or any other class. I ask that you use this time productively and respect your peers and the class environment.

Students may also ask to see their grade progress on this day or use class time to discuss with me any concerns and/or receive one on one instruction on any content that was presented throughout the week.

Monday: Animation: Flipbook/Stop Animation Section Introduced: Today you will be introduced to the Animation Process. We will take a look at Pixar Animation "How We Do It"; Stop Animation- what it is and how it has been used; and finally, Flipbook Animation- what it is and how to create your own. (Lecture/Demonstration. Internet/projector technology used for lesson)

"In the modern era of computer-generated effects, we've been able to mix real world footage with non-existent characters and environments more seamlessly than was even remotely possible a few decades ago".

Tuesday: Using Powerpoint for Flipbook creation. Today you will get into groups of 3/4 to collaborate in creating animation movement in a powerpoint flipbook. (Laptops/Elmo/projector/internet technology used for lesson execution)

Wednesday: Vocational Fair. Today we will visit the Vocational Fair held by the Counseling department. We will record the event for a newscast. Included: Interviews with students, vendors, counseling department; B-roll footage. (Technology and skills needed: camera(s), tripod, microphone(s), xlr(s), tape(s), battery(s), interview techniques, and shot composition techniques)

Thursday and Friday: Flipbook Animation cont'd: Two other mediums utilitized in creating flipbook animation will be explored over these two days; (1) Digital camera and (2) hand drawn flippies. Short lecture/demonstration (illustrated examples will used for lesson/practice execution time slot.

Supplies needed: (Digital still camera, your cameral phone may be used as a source; card stock; internet/projector)

Handout: On Friday you will receive detailed instructions for your Flipbook assignment. You will have one week to complete your project. Some class time will be provided to work on your Animation Flipbook, however please plan for time outside the classroom to work on it as well.

-Daily Dose of Television will resume starting today.

-We will have a short meeting on the status of your #2 taping assignment. Each crew will report on the status of their story development and I will decide on how each crew is to proceed based on the degree of proficiency in the Preproduction status of each crew.

-Lastly, we will begin the set up for a studio recording: This will be a two camera studio production simulation. Crew positions are as follows:

Today we will continue the Two Camera studio production simulation. Students will be assigned a position on the set, Mrs. G. will be the producer. We will practice the duties for each position through a simulated taping experience. Over the next several days, students will rotate through the different job positions and perform the duties specific to the job assigned. Students must log their time at each of the 5 job postings.

Monday: Today, we will begin the process of Pre-Production for your next crew assignment. Each crew will start to develop a storyboard for their next taping assignment. Due today is the show concept, including Title of Project; Subject; and outline for the story.

This week, you will have (2) quizzes. One on Module 1a (A Birdseye View of the Production Process) on Wednesday; and one on Module 1b, on Friday. A UNIT TEST will be given next week, wrapping up on the Production Process.

In addition, we will focus on March Reading Month. Students are encouraged to bring in a Children's Book (10 points extra credit). We will record the reading of selected books during class time and edit the story with imported illustrations in the editing suites. In conjunction, we will continue the editing (post-production) process to complete the remaining PSA's/Advertisements that were shot over the past few weeks.

Monday-Thursday: PSA TELEPROMPTER RECORDING - EDITING - WRAP IT UP

This week will be dedicated to finishing all recordings of your Public Service Announcement/Advertisement.

Due to the Snow Day and some technical glitches, we will spend time this week recording the remaining PSA/Ad's. Crew responsibilities for this assignment include set-up of the studio: (camera, lavaliere microphones, teleprompter monitor, light grid and set.

Members of the other crews are to be respectful observers as well as helpful production assistants as needed. In addition, crews who have completed their recordings will have access to the editing suite to upload and edit their PSA/Ad. If Mrs. G selected your PSA/Ad to edit for air, you will be able to view/participate in the creation of the final product.

FRIDAY: On Friday, we will 'Wrap It Up'. All crews will participate in a reflection piece on their writing/execution of their PSA/Ad.

Movie Review Final Copy Due on Monday (PSA Rough Draft due on Friday)

This week will be dedicated to writing an effective Public Service Announcement. You will learn what a PSA is; How to approach writing a PSA; Selecting a topic for your PSA; and begin writing a rough draft for your PSA Assignment. You will also be introduced to Teleprompter techniques (helpful tips) and be provided practice time on the teleprompter.

Today we I will be handing out the "Task Achievement" form. Everyone filled one out at the beginning of the 1st Semester. You are to fill out the form, with today's date, and we will compare how much you have learned in the various disciplines of Television throughout the semester. Student's new to the class will also fill out a form and this will be your 'baseline' for comparison down the road.

We will look at samples of various writing styles on movie reviews. Looking fat specific techniques used to; 1) convey an opinion on a movie; 2) discuss actors; 3) address directing, editing and cinematography; 4) summarize the movie, without giving away too much; and 5) conclude a review wrapping up your overall opinion

Handouts: TV Terminology and Acronyms. Students will receive (2) Broadcast Terminology handouts. One contains Acronyms that you need to become familiar with and will be quizzed on this Friday. The other contains a list of defined Broadcast terms. Your homework assignment is to write a complete sentence for each of the terms. Please underline the word within the sentence that you are using in the context of the sentence. Proper grammar and punctuation must be observed. These words will also be on the quiz Friday.

According to the Taping Schedule, News crews that are scheduled to record part or all of their news segment will set up all necessarry equipment and set out to record their news segment.

Monday: Videotaping Interviews

Lecture/Discussion/Demonstration: Today we will introducce sound advice for "Before the Interview" and "During the Interview" do's, don'ts, tips and techniques. This advice will be put to the test for when you plan and conduct interviews. You will be provided a handout "Advice on Videotaping Interviews for reference.

Tuesday: Camera Techniques

Students will be called upon to demonstrate various camera operating techniques that have been introduced and practiced over the past several weeks. As each crew is preparing to go back out into the field to videotape the next eng assignment we first need to continue with the mastery of specific skills that are critical to produce the news segment.

Wednesday/Thursday: Intro's and Outro's

Each crew will write and prepare an Intro and Outro that is exclusive to their news segment. With an "approved" copy, each crew will videotape their "Intro" and "Outro" for evaluation.

Friday: Review

Today we will review the weeks advice on Videotaping Interviews; Camera Techniques as well as Critique each "crews" intro/outro recordings.

Monday: TV News Crew Assignment

Students will break out into Crews and read over the handout on News Crew Productions. Collectively you must answer all the questions on the attached assignment sheet. Due at the end of the hour

Tuesday: Assessment Review

Today we will revisit the last 3 assessments and work through solving the problems. Students will be called upon to demonstrate how the correct answer were derived.

Wednesday: Military Time

Students will be introduced to Military time conversion. The primary purpose of military time system is to prevent confusion between A.M. and P.M. Aside from the armed forces, military time is being implemented by train, bus, ships, airplanes and other entities to supply accurate schedule. (elmo/handout/worksheet/homework)

Thursday

Military Time Drill: We will continue with Military Time Conversion. We will review homework conversion worksheet and students will be called upon to convert Military Time to Civilian Time as well as convert Civilian Time to Military Time. (Homework assignment on Video Camera Manual)

Friday

Students will be given Assessment #4/Level 4 Test. We will watch the Filmmaking Techniques videos that best represent the techniques from the assignment. We will discuss how these techniques can be used to enhance future recordings. (hand in manual highlighting homework)

Monday: Critique/Review of Filmmaking Techniques Assignment
We will continue to individually critiqued each crew on their footage shot for the "Filmmaking Techniques" assignment. Any crew that has already received their critique and were instructed to "re-shoot" any technique must sign out the camera and complete the requirements.

Tuesday: "Lights-Camera-Action" Word Search Assignment
This is a 1/2 day and students will receive a wordsearch handout that is to be completed by the end of the hour.

Wednesday: TV Viewing Assignment
Students will be given a TV Viewing Assignment sheet. You are to watch a TV news show and observe various techniques as well as content coverage. Please answer all of the questions fully. The Assignment is due at the beginning of the hour on Friday, November 5th.

Thursday: Wrap up on Filmmaking Techniques
We will meet in Room 300 and go over footage that I have selected from the assignment that best represents the techniques that we have been going over for the past two weeks.

Friday: Make-up Day

Today, any reviews,critiques,test make-up, etc. that students/crews need to wrap up for their quarter grade will be addressed. No exceptions will be made for incomplete and/or missing assignments after this day.

Monday - Wednesday

Filmmaking Techniques Recording Assignment: Each crew will be given a "Shot Sheet" from the Filmmaking Techniques video. Your crew must set up (block) each of the shot types listed and record a 3 to 5 second example of the technique. The shots must be labeled; create cue cards or state on camera which "technique" you are taping. Be sure to have your camera white balanced with proper iris settings.

Wednesday - Friday: Camera Set-up Proficiency Preparation

Each student must practice proper camera set-up procedure including:
- tripod preparation
- camera mount on tripod
- leveling tripod head
- mounting battery on camera
- powering up camera
- inserting tape into camcorder
- connecting an external microphone to camcorder
- settings for microphone input
- white balance
- iris adjustments

Monday: Cable Wrapping Practice for Proficiency and Assessment #2 Make Up

Students will utilize class time to practice proper Cable Wrapping Technique. BNC and XLR cables will be available to practice both the Over/Under technique as well as the Blanket Technique.

Tuesday: Filmmaking Techniques

Students will be introduced to Filmmaking Techniques. Students will watch the "Filmmaking Technique" video (link is provided on the TV Production Blogspot). Each crew will be responsible for going out in the field and filming an example of each of these techniques.

HANDOUT: Students will also receive a handout "Filmmaking Techniques" with a full list of required techniques.

HOMEWORK: Filmmaking Techniques Definitions/Due Thursday, October 21, 2010:
You are to look up and write a definition for all of the terms found on the "Filmmaking Techniques" handout. Please have it typed (in the order as found on handout) with your Name, Date, Hour on the top.

Wednesday,Thursday, Friday: Cable Wrapping Proficiency

Students will be tested for proficiency as they demonstrate proper Cable Wrapping Techniques with the BNC and XLR Cable types. Students must pass the proficiency with an 80% proficiency score.

Crews will go out in the field and record their "Filmmaking Techniques" video described above.

A QUIZ WILL BE ADMINISTERED TO ALL STUDENTS PERTAINING TO THE INFORMATION
PROVIDED ON THE "CABLE WRAPPING-A DETAILED EXPLANATION" VIDEO LINK THAT WAS VIEWED IN CLASS AND MADE AVAILABLE ON THE BLOGSPOT. BE READY! THE QUIZ WILL TAKE PLACE EITHER WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY.

Monday: BASICS UNIT TEST RESULTS/REVIEW:

We will hand back the Basics Unit Test results and open a Q & A for clarification as well as key in on specific areas that may have been problematic.

Tuesday/Wednesday: 2nd Taping Critique Cont'd:

In light of Homecoming activities from the week prior - we will continue the 2nd Taping Critique on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

Thursday: CABLE COILING TECHNIQUES

On Tursday, I will demonstrate the propoer Cable Coiling Techniques for the BNC and the XLR cables. Students will be given time to practice for proficiency.

Friday: Set Up for Football Game and Cable Coiling Practice

On Friday we will run a check list and pack up the equipment needed for the final home Football game ENG Taping. Students will also be provided XLR and BNC cables to practice proper coiling techniques.

Week 5: October 4th through October 8th, 2010

Monday: 2nd Taping Critique:

Starting Monday, student news crews will be evaluated on their 2nd Field Taping Assignment. Grading will be based on improvements/mastery of specific area's denoted on 1st Taping Critique Sheet. Critiques will continue through out the week until all crews have been evaluated.

Tuesday: UNIT TEST REVIEW DAY:

Students will be given a Study Guide for the Unit Test on Television Basics. The Unit Test will include questions pertaining to the information/disciplines from the following:
1) Basic Shooting Video 2) Light it Right Video 3) Sound Success Video 4) Basic Wiring/Cables Handout.

Crew Assignment:

Second Taping: Student crews will head out in to the field to practice recording techniques (camera set up; shot composition; microphone control; audio levels) based on Critiques that were given on First Taping Assignment. Student crews must show improved knowledge and performance on all areas highlighted in their Critiques.

Lighting and Sound: We will discuss/review/perform in depth disciplines on lighting and sound that were highlighted in the "Light it Right" and "Sounding Success" videos that were viewed last week.

1) Light it Right: The Essential Guide to Lighting for Video.

2) Sound Success: The Essential Guide to Audio for Video

Students will be required to take notes during the video for reference during practices and review of content.

Recording Critique:

We will review all practice footage that the production crews recorded the week prior. Each crew will fill out a "self critique" form regarding cameral set up; shot composition; audio levels; microphone technique.

Assignment:

Based on Recording Critique, crews will be sent back out into the field for a “Second Taping” assignment. Each area on critique that is not passed with Mastery Proficiency will be required to perform on Second Taping and improvement must be achieved in any and all areas noted on Crew Critique Sheet.

Week 2 - September 13 through September 17, 2010

Hand Outs: Students will be given a few handouts this week.

The first is the "Operating Instructions Manual" (Student Guide) for the Panasonic Camera that will be used for all video production.

The second handout is a "Wiring and Cable" identification handout. This handout is designed to help you become familiar with several wire and connector types that you will be using throughout the course of the year.

Taping: Students will break out into "Production Crews" and will be given an assignment for recording a small clip with the video camera. The objective of this assignment is to have each crew properly set up the camera for recording; to select the appropriate microphone; to set appropriate audio levels; to calibrate the white balance and aperature settings; and properly record a "video" piece for critique.

REVIEW: Thursday will be "review" day for a quiz that will be administered on Friday covering "Production Basics". To prepare for the quiz, students should refer to their movie notes, the Wiring and Cable" handout, as well as review notes.

QUIZ: A quiz of "Video Basics" will be administered on Friday. If absent on the day of the quiz, no make up quiz will be allowed unless the student is "excused" on that day. It is the responsibility of the student to set up a "make up" date with the instructor.

Introduction: Students will view a video on "Production Basics". This 30 minute video will introduce basic information on Camcorder operation; button basics; lighting basics; sound basics and composition basics. Students are required to take notes .

Task Achievement Record: Each student is required to fill out a "Task Achievement Record. This assignment will provide a baseline for each student telling of his/her incoming knowledge (proficiency) level for the various disciplines of Television Production. The assignment must be turned in at the end of the hour.

Camera Basics: This will be a "hands-on" introduction to the basic set up and operation of the Video Camera that will be used throughout the year for recordings. Demonstration of the set up will be performed by the instructor and students will be called upon to help with the demonstration.
