Week of April 21st through April 25th
BECOME A CRITIC – TV Production
The objective of this unit is that you will learn to:
1. Analyze a narrative story structure
2. Identify terms and concepts that serve the basis for movie reviews
3. Synthesize literary/visual concepts into a structured essay
Monday:
Today, you will receive (3) handouts and (1) Homework Assignment:
1. "How to write a Movie Review;
2. Movie Review “Summary”
3. Useful Adjectives for Describing Movies
KEEP ALL HANDOUTS AND BRING TO CLASS EACH DAY
Today we will take a look at some Movie Reviews and share examples of writing techniques from varying critics. The objective is to study how the critics develop and word their opinions on all the aspects of the movie. We will pause and reflect/discuss after each area is covered in the examples.
Sample Introductions:
1. A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that's as dangerous as it is enchanting.
2. Gravity stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space
Sample Review (Summaries):
1. Locke: On the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Ivan receives a phone call that sets in motion a series of events that will unravel his family, job, and soul. All taking place over the course of one absolutely riveting car ride, LOCKE is an exploration of how one decision can lead to the complete collapse of a life.
2. DIVERGENT is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader (Kate Winslet) to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four (Theo James) and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it's too late
Sample Review (Opinion):
1. Haunted House 2: Sloppy, vulgar, and manic, A Haunted House 2 might be worth a chuckle or two, but mostly it's a string of pop culture references and crude gags that fail to hit their intended targets.
2. Captain America: Suspenseful and politically astute, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a superior entry in the Avengers canon and is sure to thrill Marvel diehards.
Sample Review (performances)
1. Divergent: The performances -- namely from stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James and Kate Winslet in a juicy supporting role -- always make the movie watchable and often quite engaging.
2. Woodley is an obviously talented actress, a standout in The Descendants and The Spectacular Now but she's let down by the story surrounding her.
Sample Review (Cinematography)
1. The Lego Movie: The visuals are spectacular, the 3D technology is artfully used. The most amazing thing visually is how everything — and I do mean everything — looks as though it’s constructed out of Legos. That goes for raging fire and even the wild waves of a turbulent sea rolling under a pirate ship under full sail.
2. Gravity: Cuaron’s use of 3-D is particularly strong in these massive action sequences — it’s flinch-inducing — but he also finds the delicacy in the technology in quieter moments.
